COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (AP) — Plans to put a call center with up to 250 jobs in a Cottage Grove strip mall have stalled because of fiber optics cable.
Cottage Grove has a fiber-optics connection about a quarter-mile from the site, but how to bring a fiber line to the building is in dispute.
The Register-Guard newspaper (http://is.gd/0Ms4ar ) reports that First Call Resolution wants to run above-ground cable along existing power poles, and then over Highway 99 to the proposed center.
But Cottage Grove's development code specifies new utility lines be placed underground, where they can't be harmed by falling trees in a storm.
A city estimate found that installing a fiber optics cable underground to the proposed location would cost $450,000, which First Call Resolution considers prohibitive.
The city says it's willing to negotiate.
