VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) — A 23-year-old transient accused of stealing an English bulldog puppy at gunpoint from an Oregon couple has pleaded not guilty to several charges.

The Columbian reports (http://is.gd/nVyVhy ) that Jajuane Etheridge was arraigned Friday in Vancouver, Wash., because the puppy was recovered there on Oct. 21 after a three-hour SWAT standoff. Police found the pup unharmed in a suitcase.

Etheridge is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of stolen property. Trial was set for Dec. 17.

Prosecutors allege the man stole the puppy after arranging via Craigslist to purchase two dogs on Oct. 19 from an Oregon City, Ore., couple, Jim and Pat Steele. He said he'd pay $4,000 for both dogs.

Etheridge is accused of meeting the couple in a mall parking lot, displaying a gun and driving off with one puppy.
