BEND, Ore. (AP) — A small warming fire lit by a canoeist on the Deschutes River grew to burn more than acre before it was extinguished.
The Bulletin (http://is.gd/0A37Js ) reports the canoeist called to report the fire south of Bend around 5 a.m. Saturday.
Water-dropping helicopters, hand crews and an engine crew brought the fire under control, and it was declared contained at around 6:30 p.m.
The fire was on the lava flow side of the river near Aspen Camp, upstream from Lava Island Falls. The rocky terrain prevented the fire from growing much further.
