NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon State University professor says pelicans are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of murre chicks at a seabird colony near Yaquina Head near Newport.

Professor Rob Suryan says brown pelicans flew into the murre colony Monday night. As the adult murres fled the chicks fell into the ocean or were eaten by the pelicans. A research assistant counted 300 dead murres along a three-mile stretch of Agate Beach.

Suryan told KVAL (http://is.gd/2EjXjP) the disruption likely means a near failure of this year's hatch.
