BROWNSVILLE, Ore. (AP) — An excavation manager during the week turns paraglider pilot on the weekends.
Jim Tice of Corvallis straps a 25-horsepower engine to his back on weekends to take to the air with a powered paraglider.
Tice was among more than 30 pilots of experimental aircraft who attended the seventh annual Mid-Valley Fly-In at the Ken Sayer farm east of Brownsville this week.
The 51-year-old Tice told the Albany Democrat-Herald he had to learn how to fly as a paraglider on his own, and he encountered what he called several "near-death" experiences.
But now he says he's mastered the equipment, with the right wind pattern, he can travel up to 21 miles per hour and stay aloft for about two hours at a time.
