PORTLAND -- Police have arrested the driver after a fatal crash early Wednesday morning in Southeast Portland.
The car struck a utility pole at Southeast Division Street and 42nd Avenue at about 1:30 a.m., killing the 37-year-old passenger, said Sgt. Pete Simpson of the Portland Police Bureau. He was identified Thursday as Lion Gabriel Langan.
The driver, 49-year-old John Edward Martin of Southeast Portland, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and was arrested after his release. He was charged with second-degree manslaughter, reckless driving and DUII.
The 2003 Mazda 3 was eastbound on Division and hit a power pole at 42nd. The intersection was closed until utility crews could replace the damaged pole.
