Texas infant tossed from wreck, found in drainage gate unharmed

TEXARKANA, Ark. (KTHV) - Firefighters are calling it a miracle after an 8-month-old infant survived being thrown from a car that was involved in a crash on Friday evening in Texarkana.

Our sister station, KSLA, reported that the crash happened around 7:00 p.m. on I-30 eastbound between a car and an 18-wheeler. From the passengers testimony, the 18-wheeler clipped the family's car. When first responders arrived, family members said that the infant had been thrown from the car and they were unable to find her.

"We immediately began searching in the hay," said Texarkana firefighter Josh Moore. "A Good Samaritan was already out here searching in the hay and he claimed he heard something in this general direction."

Firefighters began to remove the hay from a nearby drainage gate, which sits roughly 35 feet away from the roadway in the interstate median. That's when Moore and others found the 8-month-old sitting down in the grate, looking right up at them.

"She wasn't screaming, she wasn't crying, was just sitting there waiting for us," he said.

The group worked together, maneuvering the child through the grate until she was finally free. She was immediately check for injuries by EMTs on scene and shockingly they only found a scratch on her forehead. For Moore, he said there had to be some kind of "divine intervention" for her to come out of the wreck uninjured.

"So many times we go out and things aren't okay," said TAFD Captain Charlie Smith. "And just during the holidays here to have a positive just feels good.

None of the other 4 passengers in the car sustained significant injuries, but were taken to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. Police have not released any names of those involved, but did say that the car seat was not installed properly. They also said they have not given any citations to the family related to the lack of proper child restraints.

The driver of the 18-wheeler that is accused of clipping the car is being ticketed for an improper and unsafe lane change.
