Gorge residents threatened by possible flooding and landslides

Gorge residents prepare for potential flooding

CASCADE LOCKS, Ore. -- The Gorge was on alert for possible flooding and landslides as heavy rains pound the Portland area Saturday.

On Saturday the National Weather Alert issued a flash flood warning for the area surrounding Cascade Locks, advised people near some creeks to move to higher ground. “Never experienced anything like this before.” said Brenda Wood, a Cascade Locks resident and business owner.

The landslide danger is magnified because of damage from the Eagle Creek fire.  “Heavy rain can trigger landslides.” said Bill Burns, engineering geologist at the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries.

He advises people to be aware of the landslide hazard. Landslide are  particularly likely  near Eagle, Oneonta and Herman creeks, officials said.
