Man found passed out in car with daughters

ST. HELENS, Ore. – A man was arrested after he was found passed out behind the wheel at a St. Helens intersection with his two daughters in the backseat.

Officers discovered Richard Amos Shellbe’s vehicle stopped at the intersection of South 18th Avenue and Church Street at about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 30. The car was running and the headlights were on.

Shellbe was found passed out and his two daughters, ages 6 and 9, were sleeping in the backseat.

After Shellbe woke up, officers determined he was under the influence of a controlled substance. Officers searched Shellbe and found 3.5 grams of methamphetamine and a pipe, according to St. Helens police. A search of the car led to the discovery of a .40-caliber handgun under the driver’s seat, several more pipes, and items used to manufacture meth, police said.

Shellbe was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants, possession of a controlled substance, reckless endangering, and endangering the welfare of a minor. He was booked into the Columbia County Jail.

His daughters were put in custody of the Department of Human Services.
