Passenger seriously injured in SW Portland crash; driver charged with DUII

PORTLAND, Ore. – A 21-year-old man was arrested on drunken driving charges following a crash that left his passenger with life-threatening injuries early Saturday morning in Portland.

Garret Scheckla was driving southbound on Southwest Capitol Highway when at around 1:50 a.m. he drifted into the northbound lane and his BMW 323 collided with a Subaru Impreza near Freeman Street, according to Portland police.

The passenger in Scheckla’s BMW was hospitalized with “serious life-threatening injuries,” police said.

A passenger in the Subaru suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators believe Scheckla was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

He was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of DUII, reckless endangering and reckless driving.
