Parking meter thefts in Oregon City baffle police

Thieves cut parking meters off poles

OREGON CITY, Ore. – Police have a parking meter mystery on their hands: someone is cutting them right off the metal pole to steal them. The latest incident happened overnight Tuesday, the third theft of a double-headed parking meter since June.

The thefts have occurred in the downtown area, but on side streets where there have been no cameras to catch the thief cutting off the meters.

Police say the thief isn’t getting much money from the meters; they hold only a small amount of coins and are emptied frequently.

But replacing them is costly. And there is another cost for the city’s downtown.

"The  businesses are frustrated because this is one way of keeping patrons moving throughout the city," said Oregon City Police Captain Shaun Davis. "Patrons come down here and they don’t know what to do, are they gonna get a ticket or can they park here for free?"

If you have information about the stolen parking meters, call the police department’s tip line at  503-496-1616 and reference OCPD case # 17-3571.
