'Jury duty' phone call scam spreading in Portland

Jury duty phone scam is spreading

PORTLAND, Ore. – A scam continues to grow in the Portland area, with callers telling victims they missed jury duty and must pay a $900 fine.

The scammers claim to be deputies, but Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Steve Alexander says deputies do not call people about missing jury duty.

“In fact, warrants are not issued for people that fail to appear for jury duty in Multnomah County,” he added.

People who have questions about jury service are encouraged to call the court's jury coordinator. Click here for more information.

Anyone who gets one of these phone calls is asked to report it to the MCSO tip line at 503-988-0560.

While the number of these phone calls is increasing, the victims continue to see through the ruse. Alexander says investigators have not found anyone who lost money in the scheme.
