BATTLE GROUND, Wash. – A Battle Ground mom says she can’t work anymore after someone stole expensive photography equipment from her locked minivan.
She depends on that gear to make a living as a professional photographer.
“After I went through and started tearing things apart, I realized the worst of the worst had happened,” Said Korie Nicole. “I just broke down.”
Her love of photography shows on her business website “Korie Nicole Photography” and on the walls of her home.
The single mom channels this passion to provide for her daughters, 7-year-old Dylan and 9-year-old Devon.
On Oct. 23, the three looked forward to a special early-morning trip to Disneyland. The family had saved for years, for the trip, Nicole said.
At around 12:30 a.m., she couldn’t sleep, so she pre-packed the family van in their quiet Battle Ground neighborhood. The plan was to leave at 4 a.m.
“Put my camera gear, wallet, carry-on, Devon’s hoverboard,” she said. “So that way, we could get at least three hours of sleep in.”
She says she locked the doors. But when the family went to go to the airport, they realized someone stole everything out of the van, even the photography gear.
“For about three hours straight we were looking, cried for about the whole time,” said Devon.
“It breaks my heart,” said Nicole, “Because that's how I take care of my kids.”
She called police, and used Facebook to let clients know what happened.
In the end, the family was still able to go to Disneyland, and Nicole has a message for others about leaving personal belongings in the car, even for a couple of hours.
“Just be extra cautious. Because unfortunately this is the world we live in. And not everyone has the same mindset, and the same heart that some of us do.”
“For people who say, 'Oh, you shouldn’t have had it in your car, that was kind of ignorant.' Maybe, yes. But I’ve been here for 4 years, it was the middle of the night," she said. "Nothing has ever happened. I was just trying to pre-plan. I was trying to think ahead and be prepared.”
She also has a message for the thief.
“I hope karma brings you exactly what you deserve.”
