HILLSBORO, Ore --- Two people died and a third person was left wounded after a Memorial Day murder-suicide shooting south of Hillsboro.

The shooting was reported about 6:35 p.m. at 5355 SW River Road, according to Sgt. Dave Thompson.

Kenneth Van Patten, 61, shot and killed his wife, Melinda Van Patten. He then turned the gun on Glen Hamilton, 56, who was wounded. Thompson said the shooter then killed himself.

The Van Pattens' neighbor Jared Whitney said he heard the shots, then saw a man stumbling away from the house yelling, "I'm just trying to help, trying to help."

Hamilton was shot in the backside. He was living at the home. The Van Pattens had been married for several decades, Thompson said.

The sheriff's office became aware of the incident when both Hamilton and a neighbor called 911 to report shots had been fired, he said.

Neighbors said police were at the Van Patten home a few months ago when there was a loud argument.
