KELSO, Wash. – A Kelso man planned a fiery explosion in a plot to kill his wife and himself on Monday, according to police.
Harry Reynolds, 55, filled his home with propane gas and then “lured” his wife inside, planning to ignite the gas and kill them both, said Capt. Darr Kirk, with the Kelso Police Department.
“Officers discovered that he had emptied at least one 5-gallon propane tank into the residence and then waited for his wife to get home,” Kirk said. “His attempt to ignite the propane failed and his wife managed to escape. She fled to the Kelso Police Department to report the incident.”
The woman told police that she smelled the gas but her husband tried to force her to stay inside the home. Then, according to court records, her husband pulled out a lighter and said, "we're going to go out with a bang."
The wife got away without any injuries and Reynolds was arrested on assault and unlawful imprisonment charges a short time later.
People living nearby were shocked when they learned about the allegations.
"We were all outside with our kids, playing with our kids and stuff. I can't believe that that could have happened when we were, I mean, right there. That's scary, really scary," two neighbors commented.
Reynolds has a criminal history dating back to 1998 which includes a sex offense for acts on a child and failure to register as a sex offender.
His bail in this case was set at $75,000.
