ENTERPRISE, Ore. – A former deputy shot and critically injured a relative during a dispute Sunday night.

Daniel Courtney, 47, allegedly shot his relative, Randy Dickenson of La Grande, around 8 p.m. Sunday.

The shooting took place on Courtney’s property at 63885 Williamson Rd. near Enterprise, Ore.

Dickenson, 53, was airlifted to a hospital in Boise, ID with critical injuries.

Courtney, a former deputy with the Wallowa County Sheriff’s Office, remained on his property.

Officers from the Oregon State Police, Union County Sheriff's Office and Enterprise Police Department responded to assist the WCSO. OSP SWAT personnel also were requested to respond.

Courtney surrendered at 1:15 a.m. Monday. He was taken into custody and charged with assault.

According to Courtney's brother, Steven Strong, Courtney had been previously cited for pulling a weapon on his mother and little brother in June. He said police confiscated more than 40 weapons.

"After the first incident, he got his weapons back," Strong said. Strong said his brother suffers from post traumatic stress disorder related to an on-duty shooting.

Because of Courtney’s former relationship with the WCSO, Oregon State Police were investigating the shooting.
