BEAVERTON, Ore. – At least three people noticed huge withdrawals from their bank accounts after they used self-service stamp machines at Washington County post offices.
“Skimmers” are often used on ATM’s and gas pumps to steal credit card information. Now there's a chance they've been installed on some of those stamp machines, said Sgt. Bob Ray of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
“We've seen three cases just this afternoon here, people have been to two different post offices and have bought stamps the same identical way,” Ray said Monday. “Whether or not that's where the skimming device was, or some other electronic device that's capturing the information, we don't know.”
Detectives said post office employees conduct daily sweeps for skimmers.
Afterward the victims noticed the maximum amount possible was withdrawn from their accounts at ATM’s in Bethany and in Northeast Portland.
He said he can’t be sure all three cases are connected, but it appears to be “more than a coincidence.”
Ray said people should continue to feel safe using the stamp machines at their post offices, but they should also be sure check their bank accounts regularly.
He said investigators were working closely with the post offices and banks to get surveillance video and figure out exactly what happened.
