Suspect arrested after fatal shooting at Springfield apartment

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — One person is dead and two others were injured after a 23-year-old man opened fire in a western Oregon apartment, authorities said Sunday.

Police in Springfield say Jordan Wyatt Ledbetter, of Springfield, has been charged with murder and related assault charges in connection with the Saturday evening shooting. Police first identified the suspect as a 25-year-old man but later corrected Ledbetter's age.

Springfield Police Lt. Scott McKee said Ledbetter and at least four other people were at a social gathering at Ledbetter's apartment when the shooting occurred.

"As you can imagine it was chaos inside that small apartment. It seems to have erupted from a relatively benign social setting ... it was sort of a hosted gathering," McKee said Sunday afternoon.

Officers went to the apartment after people called 911 around 6:30 p.m. to report hearing gunfire and that people had been shot. Responding officers found two men — one with a chest wound and one with an arm wound — lying at the base of the stairs leading to Ledbetter's apartment.

A third victim, who had been shot in the neck, had already fled the scene to seek help at a nearby home.

McKee said the reports of victims at different locations at first made it appear as if there was an active shooter in the area, but said an investigation revealed all three victims were shot while inside the apartment.

The responding officers heard shouts for help from inside the apartment, and there found a fourth person struggling with the suspect, according to a press release. Police said the suspect had become separated from his semi-automatic handgun at some point, and the weapon was later found outside the apartment complex.

All three shooting victims were taken to area hospitals, but the man with the chest wound died of his injuries early Sunday morning, police said.

Investigators say illicit narcotics appeared to play a role in the shooting.

Ledbetter is expected to be formally arraigned in court on Monday. It was not immediately clear if he had retained an attorney.
