SALEM—With spring around the corner, those looking to do some home remodeling might be interested in a new service offered by the state’s Construction Contractor’s Board.

All contractors working in Oregon must be licensed, bonded and insured. Now you can check if a contractor you are considering is licensed by texting their CCB number to a state hotline.

Text the contractor’s number to 1-503-444-8898 and you’ll receive a reply with the license status and expiration date, according to Cheryl Martinis with the CCB.

"Licensed contractors have bonds and insurance that offer some financial protection to homeowners should a problem arise," said Berri Leslie, interim CCB administrator. "Most construction projects go smoothly when you do your homework by researching the contractor and by making informed decisions during the project."

More than 70 percent of homeowners know that contractors must be licensed but more than half don’t verify licenses, Martinis said.

The CCB said residents could also check license status and file complaints and reports at www.oregon.gov/ccb or by calling 503-378-4621.
