PORTLAND -- Golf can be a simple game, hit the ball and put it in the hole. McKennon golf bags are simple as well, but with plenty of style.
“Really, the most basic ways to make a golf bag is two pockets and a strap and that in essence is what it is,” says Mike McKennon, founder and CEO of McKennon Golf Bags. “We do use a lot of technology and that makes it certainly light weight relative to the other leather bags in the market.”
McKennon, 44, of Lake Oswego, is the man behind the bags, which are made right in Lake Oswego.
McKennon played golf at Lakeridge High School and Oregon St. He worked at Nike Golf for nearly a decade before getting laid off.
Later, he took his passion for golf and experience and put them into making leather bags. “We started in essence late last year,” he said, “and somebody actually paid for a bag in late January of this year.”
The leather bags started selling one by one, in places like Sweden, Germany and England. Then came a write up in Golf Week Magazine.
“The print version came out first,” said McKennon, And then the online version came out the following week. I was just literally overwhelmed. The lead time has been starting to expand a little bit, but it’s been great though.”
The McKennon Leather Bags sell for $699 apiece.
