PORTLAND -- Last weekend was supposed to be a pre-Valentines shopping bonanza for local shops. Mother Nature had other plans with a winter blast. But, thanks to social media, the holiday weekend Is now having a change of heart.

"Our small business got slammed during the winter storm," said City Commissioner Nick Fish. "Today on Valentine’s Day it's our chance to show them some love by shopping local."

When the snow fell a week ago, Fish started a Twitter campaign to encourage folks to support their neighborhood businesses.

It worked.

Venture Portland, which represents 50 neighborhood shopping areas around the city picked up on the theme and created #pdxLOVESsmallbiz. 19,000 businesses are now part of the support local movement.

At Oblation Papers and Press on Northerdy 12th Dtreet in the Pearl, Valentines is their biggest card holiday.

"A real handmade paper card or a letter press printed card or a local artist made card is a true gift," said Oblation co-owner Jennifer Rich. "and it's much more precious then it use to be."

With Valentine’s Day on a Friday, it means local retailers get a weekend bonus of shopping.
