PORTLAND -- Designers from all over the country and Canada are in Portland this week for 'Struktur.'

That's Danish for 'structure.' It's an event to bring new life to outdoor gear designs.

Portland is, after all, the epicenter when it comes to design, marketing and sale of outdoor clothing and equipment.

Nike, Columbia Sportswear, Adidas, Keen, and Danner all make their home here.

Struktur wants to recharge the outdoor gear industry.

"To share ideas, talk, connect, but also to lift the industry, to lift our professional level," said Struktur co-founder Michelle Ross. "To organize and see ourselves as professional designers, the problem solvers that we are."

Style and functionality may be the keys for good outdoor design, but it takes more than that in a very crowded field.

Standing out in this industry is its biggest challenge.

The setting for the two-day conference at the Ecotrust building is a reflection of where the industry is, to be sustainable and sensitive to environmental needs.

Some of the topics covered include "Crowdfunding," How to "Make it in America" and "How Great Designers Think."
