PORTLAND - Retailers and restaurants are getting ready for what they hope is a big Mother’s Day weekend.

At Papa Hayden on Northwest 23rd, it's one of their busiest days of the year, staff will come in an hour earlier to handle the crowds.

Spending is expected to be up 11 percent over last year, with an average of nearly $169 each, a total of nearly $21 billion.

Special promotions are helping drive sales.

While we're spending more, we are still trying to save where we can. Most folks say they'll shop at a department or discount store.
