WOODBURN, Ore. -- Labor Day was a big day for last minute back-to-school shoppers, especially at the Woodburn Company Stores.
“Well, you can definitely tell that school’s starting soon,” observed Bend High School sophomore, Madison Capps. She spent Monday shopping for the perfect back to school outfit. “It has to be something comfortable but cute at the same time,” said Capps.
Cost was also a factor for many parents. Some shoppers dropped extra gas money in exchange for retail deals in Woodburn.
“It’s nice to drive down here and be able to save a little on taxes and get good discounts,” said Tiffani Le, who brought her family down from Seattle.
By 1:30 pm on Monday, the parking lots and the Woodburn Company Stores were full.
“It’s pretty packed out there but it’s cycling through pretty quickly,” said marketing director, Kristy Kummer-Pred.
“For us, Labor Day weekend is the second-busiest in terms of sales and traffic, right behind the Thanksgiving shopping weekend,” said Kummer-Pred.
The crowds surprised several shoppers, including Wendy King, who drove up from Albany.
“I wasn't expecting this at all,” said King. “We parked in the back parking lot and I've never had to park there before.”
To accommodate the extra crowds, The Woodburn Company Stores stayed open until 8 p.m. on Labor Day.
