SALEM, Ore. -- Several Oregonians who traded in cars on the "Cash for Clunkers" program were refunded cash by two dealers who had not paid out the scrap value of traded-in cars.
In a settlement with the State of Oregon Department of Justice, Toyota of Gladstone and Larry Miller Honda of Hillsboro will pay 236 Oregon consumers a total of $43,571 for the scrap value of the vehicles they traded in.
The program was designed to help the economy and the environment by spurring new car sales. Car owners could receive federal subsidies of up to $4,500 for trading in their old cars for new ones that achieve significantly higher gas mileage.
The clunkers program was set up to boost U.S. auto sales and help struggling automakers through the worst sales slump in more than a quarter-century.
More than 8,500 Oregonians participated in the program, receiving $36.6 million in rebates, but many had not recieved the scrap value in the deal.
Kroger's office said Toyota of Gladstone and Larry Miller Honda of Hillsboro readily agreed to fix the problem
Consumers who think they may not have received the scrap value of the vehicles should call the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Hotline (877-877-9392) or file a complaint with the Financial Fraud/Consumer Protection Section of the Oregon Department of Justice.
