PORTLAND – Stores from car dealers to mattress retailers are all using Monday's presidential holiday to create a huge selling opportunity.
Many are offering discounts that rival one of America's biggest shopping days, Black Friday.
Mimi Patterson from Portland spent part of her day Monday at Fred Meyer. She said the half-off deals were too good to pass up.
"I need a little lightweight vacuum cleaner, saw it on sale so I came for it," she said.
Presidents Day has become a presidential campaign of sorts for retailers hoping you'll elect to shop with them.
Newspapers, radio stations and television channels were filled with ads promoting sales.
"We have [customers] beating down our doors to see what on sale," said Josh Lundbom, spokesperson for Fred Meyer Stores.
This weekend’s sales are a kickoff to clear out winter merchandise. Some of the deepest discounts are on appliances, home furnishings and last year's HD TVs, laptops and cameras.
On the web, deals were flooding inboxes.
ShopItToMe.com reports Presidents day discounts top Black Friday, 47 percent versus 44 percent.
Most retailers were extending the clearance portion of their sales for the next few weeks.
