PORTLAND -- A Portland man is teaming up with his bulldog for a new business venture that could have your pet resting easier.

“Anybody who owns a bulldog knows they love to sleep and Ginger has always demanded we have a bed for her,” explained John Acree as he looked affectionately at his bulldog named Ginger.

Acree wouldn’t settle for any bed.

He set out to manufacture one with a sustainable design using all local products and an all local work force.

Some of the assembly will be done in his work room he’s used for several years producing window treatments.  He’ll also hire workers at Exceed Enterprises in Milwaukie where they put people with developmental challenges to work.

“The people here feel really good about what they do. They’re actually making a living for themselves. It’s a win for everybody,” remarked Gary Sirianni, VP of Business Development with Exceed Enterprises.

Workers at Exceed will measure the filling needed for the pillows on the beds.

“The filling is made of recycled 2 liter soda bottles,” said Acree. The beds range in price from $150 to $275 and Acree hopes they’ll become part of home décor, “One of our goals was to create a bed pretty enough t leave out, even when company comes over.”

Another goal was to benefit a place where animals get veterinary care.

Five percent of profits from Ginger Beds will go to Dove Lewis Animal Hospital.

“It’s a great facility where they’ve helped us take care of 7-year-old Ginger, so we wanted to help them continue their good work,” concluded Acree as he glanced down at Ginger cuddled comfortably on her brightly colored bed.

More information on the effort to support Ginger Beds can be found on the Crowd Supply website.
