Is $69,000 enough for 4 to live modestly in Portland?
PORTLAND – A new study determined that a family of four living in the Portland area needs to make nearly $69,000 a year to live modestly.
According to the Economic Policy Institute’s Family Budget Calculator, a family of two parents and two children must make $68,722 for a “secure yet modest living standard.”
The calculator estimated costs including housing, food, child care, health care and taxes. The study determined that a family of four needs at least twice the amount of the federal poverty line to live modestly.
According to EPI, the most expensive city for a family of four was New York City, where they would need $93,722.
The most affordable was Marshall County, Miss., where four could live modestly on $48,144 a year.
