PORTLAND – Northeast Portland’s Second Glance Books is writing its final chapter this month.
And that means there won’t be any used book stores left in the Hollywood District.
Rachelle Markley opened her store about 8-1/2 years ago, but the building at Northeast 45th Avenue and Sandy Boulevard has been a book store for three decades.
Markley called it a place of discovery. She said you can find that treasure there that you didn't know you wanted.
Like many other independent booksellers, she said a change in the way people buy and read, plus a lack of foot traffic in the neighborhood, has forced the going-out-of-business sale.
“There's still a lot of people who still operate in the old-fashioned way. They don't want to go online. They actually want to see a book or talk to a real person,” Markley said.
She added that many people are giving Second Glance a first look now that she has announced it will close on July 25.
Markley said she won’t give up on her love of books. She will now turn her attention to online sales, helping former customers find vintage and collectible editions.
