PORTLAND -- A peer-to-peer vehicle sharing program is providing another option for commuters and the company is paying Portlanders to try it out.

Getaround is a service which allows vehicle owners to rent out their car or truck to neighbors, friends, family - or whomever qualifies to drive it.  The vehicle's owner is in charge of deciding who can rent it and when it can be used.

It's the perfect option for people who own vehicles but don't use them regularly, according to Getaround spokesman Steve Gutmann.

"If I can rent my vehicle to other people who meet the insurance requirements and I don't take any risk, then it's a great way to make a little money," Gutmann said.

The company is looking for people willing to try renting out their vehicles. It's free to sign up and participants will get a $200 bonus. Vehicles used in the program most be newer than a 1995 model and must have less than 150,000 miles on the odometer.

Getaround joins a list of other innovative alternative transportation sources in the Rose City, such as Car2Go and Zipcar.

"Portland is a community with a tight social fabric," Gutmann said. "There's a hip demographic open to this thing."

The company boasts that each shared vehicle helps keep up to 13 other vehicles off the road.

Anyone interested in participating can register online through the Getaround website.
