PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The chief executive of cable operator Charter Communications is joining larger rival Comcast as president of its cable operations.

Neil Smit will take over part of the duties held by Comcast Corp.'s Steve Burke. Burke will relinquish his role as president of Comcast Cable but stay as chief operating officer.

Smit guided Charter Communications Inc. through its Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Comcast began the executive search process for a cable operations president last fall, when it was considering the purchase of a controlling stake in NBC Universal.

Now, Burke will have less on his plate as he gears up to run NBC Universal. The deal is under regulatory review. Charter is controlled by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.
