NEW YORK (AP) — Four Associated Press reporters are among the recipients of this year's prestigious George Polk Awards in Journalism.
The AP's Matt Apuzzo, Adam Goldman, Chris Hawley and Eileen Sullivan are being cited for their coverage of the NYPD's infiltration of Muslim communities. Their reports renewed debate over how far government should go to prevent a terrorist attack.
Also being honored is Sara Ganim, a 24-year-old crime reporter for The Patriot-News in Harrisburg, Pa. Ganim's reporting helped expose the Penn State child sex scandal.
Journalists are being honored in 15 categories.
Anthony Shadid, a New York Times reporter who died Thursday in Syria, will be honored for extraordinary valor for his work.
The awards were announced Monday by Long Island University in New York. They will be presented April 5.
