FOREST GROVE, Ore. -- The young stepsisters struck by a vehicle in Forest Grove Sunday night have now both died, according to the Multnomah County Medical Examiner.
Abigail Robinson, 11, suffered critical injuries and passed away later, at Randall Children's Hospital in Portland Monday night. Her 6-year-old stepsister Anna Dieter-Eckerdt died immediately after the two were hit by the vehicle.
Abigail and Anna had been playing in leaves along a roadway near their home in the 1700 block of Main Street when they were struck around 8:30 p.m., according to Capt. Mike Herb with the Forest Grove Police Department.
Herb said the driver may not have realized the girls were struck. Monday was "Leaf Day" in the community and leaves were piled high along the streets.
"If the children by chance were covered in the leaves and were playing in the leaves and were burying each other in the leaves, it's conceivable that the driver may have hit something and knows they hit something but perhaps thinks it may have been a piece of debris or a log or a curb or a speed bump," Herb said.
Police canvassed the neighborhood Monday, trying to find witnesses who could help them track down the driver who hit the girls. They reported finding the vehicle that struck the girls early Monday evening.
"This vehicle will be forensically searched and processed. There have been no arrests," Herb said. "This is still a very active and dynamic investigation. No other information is being be released at this time."
The tragedy hit the close-knit community hard. Hundreds of church members, co-workers and friends gathered for a candlelight vigil Monday night at Sonrise Church to mourn the loss.
A curbside memorial was also growing in size near where the girls were struck. People were leaving flowers and handwritten notes for the family. Friends said Abby was positive, fun and outgoing and Anna was always smiling.
Grief counselors were helping students and staff at Forest Grove schools deal with the tragedy. Anna was a student at Dilley Elementary, and Abby attended Tom McCall Upper Elementary.
An account was set up for donations to cover expenses for the family. Donations can be made to the "Dieter-Robinson" fund at any Columbia Community Bank or through the Sonrise Church.
Anna's biological parents are Randal Eckerdt, of North Portland, and Susan Dieter. Tom Robinson is Anna's stepfather. Abigail is the daughter of Tom Robinson and his former wife, Tersia Theel. Susan Dieter is Abigail's stepmother.
