SHERIDAN, Ore. -- Authorities say a 4-year-old boy beaten extensively is recovering from brain injuries and broken ribs, rolling in a wheelchair and making sounds, though not speaking.
But he's not yet in shape to answer questions from investigators. The Yamhill Valley News-Register reports that a former Yamhill County sheriff's deputy, 29-year-old Michael Shane Abo, is charged with assault and mistreatment and is being held on $500,000 bail.
Authorities say the boy and his 29-year-old mother had recently moved into Abo's place in Sheridan. She is charged with criminal mistreatment and reckless endangering and not allowed to have unsupervised contact with the boy. He's hospitalized in Portland.
Police said Abo told detectives the child fell down a stairwell. A doctor attributed the injuries to "blunt force trauma" on at least two occasions.
