PORTLAND -- A woman was shot Wednesday in North Portland while lighting off fireworks with a group that included more than five children under the age of 10, police said.

Shortly after 10 p.m., a car with at least three men drove by the group near the corner of North Fiske Avenue and North Fessenden at the New Columbia housing project and opened fire.

The 21-year-old victim, later identified as Mary Price, suffered gunshot wounds to her arms, and stomach. Police said her injuries were life-threatening.

Investigators believe someone in the crowd returned fire as the car with the gunman took off down North Fessenden Street.

The Portland Police Bureau's Gang Enforcement Team was investigating.

Area residents told KGW on Thursday that the neighborhood has grown increasingly more dangerous over recent years.

"It's scary. It's not the first shooting so close to here, somebody shot in the middle of the street right here, you know," said Ida Cunningham, who lives nearby.
