ST. HELENS, Ore. – A woman was shot in the leg in a hunting accident near Scappoose Friday evening, deputies said.
Just after 5 p.m., 24-year-old Lindsay Roub was hunting with 39-year-old Raymond Ozias and the two were handling her rifle when it went off and blasted her in the leg, said Sheriff Jeff Dickerson with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
When deputies arrived they found a barely-conscious Roub with a serious gunshot wound to her right leg. Deputies fashioned a makeshift tourniquet to control the bleeding while paramedics arrived to carry her out of the woods to a waiting ambulance, Dickerson said.
Ozias told deputies the two were following a buck and while walking down a steep ravine, Roub asked him to hold her rifle. When he went to grab it, he started falling backwards, grabbed the gun and it fired, hitting Roub in the leg, Dickerson said.
Deputies are treating the incident as an accidental shooting.
