PORTLAND – A woman in Northeast Portland said a man punched her and carjacked her vehicle late Wednesday afternoon.

She called 911 just after it happened, around 4 p.m., and told police the man had taken her vehicle from 18201 NE Portal Way and fled in it.

Several calls soon came into the 911 dispatch center concerning a car with a possibly drunk driver along Marine Drive near where the carjacking happened. Police quickly swarmed the area and spotted a car that matched the description near the intersection of NE 122nd Avenue and Airport Way.

Officers were able to make what they called a “high-risk traffic stop” on the victim's vehicle and took the suspected carjacker into custody, according to Sgt. Pete Simpson with the Portland Police Bureau.

Devon Mack, 18 was charged with robbery, eluding police, driving under the influence of intoxicants and reckless driving. He was scheduled to appear in court Thursday.

The victim was not seriously injured in the incident. She said the man approached her as she sat in her car in the parking lot of LaCrosse Footwear. He punched her, pulled her from the car and drove off in the vehicle.

The victim was brought to where police stopped the suspected carjacker. Portland Police returned the vehicle to the woman and she was able to drive it away.
