PORTLAND-- Light snow moved into Portland Friday at about 6:30 a.m., but by 9 a.m. rain started coming through to wash away any evidence.

Morning commuters were warned to expect  a 'wintry mix' of precipitation throughout the Friday commute, according to a National Weather Service special statement issued Thursday. But the alert was canceled Friday morning at 8:55.

Several schools in the metro area were delayed, closed or on snow routes as sleet and snow swept across southwest Washington and the upper Columbia River valley early Friday.

It was a different story to the north, where Seattle saw accumulations of snow and numerous closures.

The threat of snow is gone and the Metro area can expect to see good old fashioned rain later Friday and into the weekend, said KGW Meteorologist Nick Allard.
