COTTAGE GROVE, Ore — One person was killed in a semi truck crash south of Cottage Grove Tuesday.

Santiago Giron, 49, of Phelon, California, was getting off Interstate 5 southbound at Exit 172 when his semi truck, loaded with lumber, rolled as it approached the London Road stop sign, Oregon State Police said.

Giron died at the scene, according to Sergeant Casey Codding.

First responders asked for help from Weyerhaeuser and used a log loading truck to lift the flatbed trailer section of the truck off the cab in order to confirm that there were no passengers.

OSP troopers continued an investigation into the cause of the crash. It was unknown whether or not Giron was wearing safety restraints, police said.
