WEST LINN, Ore. -- A West Linn teacher was tricked by her bosses and then treated to a $10,000 bonus on Halloween.
Tena Christianson works at Kindercare in West Linn. She was selected as a National Educator of the Year by Knowledge Universe.
“I am overwhelmed,” she said, “and very surprised.”
Christianson did not know her bosses had nominated her for the honor. She found out she was the winner when the kids gathered for a Halloween story that she was asked to read.
The plot outlined on the pages was carefully crafted to reveal her win. When she came to the last page, she realized it was she who would have the happy ending.
“I just love what I do,” she said. “Watching the light come on for these kids when they learn new things is so rewarding.”
Tena said she had no plans for how to spend the unexpected $10,000 bonus, but she knows her students got a good Halloween lesson.
“I was tricked and I was treated,” she laughed.
