PORTLAND -- Real estate website Estately.com just ranked Oregon No. 7 in the country for "cat lovers."

"We're thrilled to hear about the ranking," said David Lytle of the Oregon Humane Society. "Frankly, we think we should be No. 1 because more cats are adopted out of this building on the west coast and maybe even the united states."

The website dubbed Oregon, "Catlandia," and why not? According to their research, Oregon had the third-highest rate of cat ownership in the country and the tenth longest lifespan for cats at 11.4 years.

There were also the more tangible signs of cat love around town. Jeld-Wen Field is home to a protected feral cat colony, and then there's “Meowhaus.”

“People travel, and sometimes the neighbor next door isn't always good enough (to watch your cats)," said Meowhaus owner Anya Sites.

The Northeast Portland cat hotel and spa is part of a growing trend in local feline finery. Stites owns three cats herself and wasn’t at all surprised by Oregonians' love for the popular pets.

"We treat (cats) like family," said Stites. "We really value animals here and I think that's the key."

"Cats are our friends," said Lytle. “They were royalty in the past and they were gods. There was a reason for that."

The states that beat out Oregon were Maine at No. 1, followed by Vermont, New Hampshire, Wyoming, Washington and West Virginia.
