CAMAS, Wash. (AP) - Police in the southwest Washington community of Camas say they've arrested a 21-year-old man after more than a dozen headstones were toppled in the Camas cemetery, many of them in the pioneer section.
Sgt. Scot Boyles said Thursday that police arrested Michael Garwood of Camas for investigation of 15 counts of violating laws protecting cemeteries and one count of malicious mischief.
Police say others may also be involved and the investigation continues.
Many of the headstones were toppled over in the “Pioneer Section” of historic the cemetery first plotted in 1885 by the Camas Colony Company.
The Camas Public Works Department, which maintains the cemetery, is working to repair the headstones.
Anyone with information about the vandalism was asked to call police at 360-834-4151.
