VANCOUVER -- A Vancouver man with autism who had been missing since Tuesday evening was found by police in Corvallis Wednesday afternoon, his mother said.

John Jenkins, 49, usually takes walks alone after dinner, but Tuesday he did not return home, so his mother called police.

The family told police that Jenkins has autism and mental illness, and that his medical condition causes him to be gullible with strangers. His mother said he liked to ride on buses.

That is likely how he got as far south as Corvallis, she said Wednesday.

Police had been concerned because of sub-freezing temperatures Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Officers did not say what condition Jenkins was in when they found him.

"The Vancouver Police Department would like to thank the media and members of the public for putting out information related to this missing person and for assistance in searching for him," said spokeswoman Kim Kapp.
