PORTLAND – This year, Valentine’s Day falls on a Friday, so whether you have a date, you’re looking to meet a special someone, or you’re thrilled to be flying solo, there is plenty to do in the City of Roses.
Perhaps you forgot to make reservations and are in a state of panic. Fear not. Celebrate the lovers’ holiday alongside your fellow city folk in true irreverent Portland fashion.
--The Night Light Lounge on Southeast Clinton is having an 80s Valentine’s Prom with a free costume contest and a photo booth. All the cliques are invited, so dust off the pastel frock and get ready to dance. Bring a date, come with a pack, or go stag to this 21-and-over blowout starting at 8 p.m.
--Maybe you’d rather stay in and dress up as your favorite Game of Thrones character. City Liquidators in Southeast Portland posted a most unusual ad on Craigslist this Valentine’s Day. The furniture warehouse apparently also has an abundance of helmets and chainmail. For 50 bucks you can dress as an ancient warrior and take thy lover on a quest for medieval romance.
--On Friday, Netflix dumped the entire second season of the highly-addictive series House of Cards. If you want to stay ahead of the spoilers, get ready to do some binge watching and fall back in love with Francis and Claire Underwood. Tell your date you’ll make it up to him or her later.
--For a night of hilarity this Valentine’s Day, head over to the Helium Comedy Club. Funnyman Dov Davidoff (“Chelsea Lately,” “Invincible”) will be splitting sides with his high-intensity brand of standup. Tickets are $15 to $27 or you can splurge on the Valentine’s special of two reserved seats complete with champagne and strawberries for $89.
--Those with no interest in romance Friday can find solace at the Eastburn tap room on East Burnside Street. The bar is throwing an anti-Valentine’s Day celebration with drink specials for singles. Partiers are invited to get down at the Stupid Cupid Dance Party with DJ Cupid Killer.
--Even if you can’t name a single U.S. President, chances are you’ve bobbed your head a time or two to “Lump, “Peaches,” or “Kitty.” For a night of guaranteed excitement, check out Northwest legends Presidents of the United States of America Friday night at the Crystal Ballroom.
