VANCOUVER -- U.S. Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler announced last month she was pregnant with her first child, but Monday she shared news that the child she's expecting in the fall is suffering from a serious medical condition called Potter's syndrome.
"At a recent, routine ultrasound appointment we received the difficult news that our baby has a serious medical condition called Potter's Syndrome," she shared on a Facebook post. "Potter's Syndrome (or Potter's Sequence) is abnormally low amniotic fluid caused by impaired kidney function which inhibits normal lung development and is often fatal."
She said she and her husband sought a second opinion and it was consistent with the first diagnosis.
"We don't know what the future holds for our family," she added, "but we ask for your prayers and appreciate the privacy a family needs in such circumstances."
Herrera Beutler said she would continue to balance the responsibilities of being an expectant mother and a U.S. Representative.
She is a second-term member of Congress, representing Washington's 3rd Congressional District.
