EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- A University of Oregon football player badly beaten in a Jan. 24 fight has been cited for investigation of misdemeanor assault in the incident.
Eugene police said Tuesday that 19-year-old placekicker Rob Beard was not taken into custody. Police spokeswoman Melinda Kletzok says she can't provide further details. Beard was hospitalized due to injuries suffered when he entered the fight to aid fellow UO kicker Mike Bowlin. Beard has since been released from the hospital.
Later that week, police arrested two men, Kirby Taylor Hawkins and Maurice Dion Peterson III, for investigation of second-degree assault. Both are Lane Community College students.
Police later cited UO football player Matt Simms for investigation of misdemeanor assault in what police allege was an attack on someone Simms thought was involved in beating up Beard.
KVAL says Simms has since left the team. So has Bowlin, who withdrew from the UO as both a student and an athlete.
