THE DALLES, Ore. – A civil suit against Mid-Columbia Medical Center began Tuesday over sex crimes committed at the hospital by anesthesiologist Frederick Field.

The suit claimed the hospital repeatedly failed to investigate reports that Field was sexually abusing patients.

Field was convicted and is serving 23 years in prison for rape and felony sexual abuse. He worked at Mid-Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles for five years. Some of the crimes occurred while women were under sedation.

A Portland law firm was representing three of seven women who are suing the hospital for battery, negligence and punitive damages.

Background: The Dalles doctor accused of sex abuse

Attorneys for the plaintiffs said the hospital did not act on a 2008 patient complaint that stated "Dr Field fondled her nipples and placed her hands on his penis..."
