PORTLAND -- National Pet Day was a trending topic in Portland's social media universe Friday morning.
The campaign was created in 2005 by Colleen Paige as a day to lavish a little more attention on one's animal companions, but also raise awareness about the importance of pet adoption. The campaign's motto is "Don't shop! Adopt!"
Locally, the 13th Annual Northwest Pet and Companion Fair opens Saturday at the Portland Expo Center. The expo will feature pet adoptions as well as a pet fashion show, flyball dog relay races and a pet photo contest.
The event is sponsored in part by the Oregon Humane Society, which hopes to adopt 11,000 pets from its care this year.
