TIGARD, Ore. – The mother of a 4-year-old boy in Tigard has been found guilty of beating her son to death.
During Jessica Dutro’s trial, prosecutors argued that she killed her son, in part, because she believed the little boy was gay.
Investigators said that Dutro and her boyfriend, Brian Canady, committed the deadly beating in August of 2012 at a Tigard homeless shelter.
The case generated national headlines largely because of Dutro’s homophobic posts on Facebook.
Prosecutors said that her online messages helped to establish a motive because she was angry about the way the four-year-old walked and talked.
Dutro’s seven-year-old daughter also provided critical testimony in the case after witnessing the abuse.
“It is time to hold Jessica Dutro accountable for the unavoidable and totally unthinkable truth," said prosecutor Megan Johnson.
Canady pleaded guilty for his role in the murder earlier this month.
Dutro also had a history of child abuse.
