TIGARD -- Tigard High social studies teacher Frank Caro has won a Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award.

Caro, a social studies teacher, receives $25,000 as part of the recognition for teaching excellence.

The awards were created in 1987 by Lowell Milken to recognize and retain high-caliber teachers.

Caro received the award in a surprise, all-school assembly Monday morning. He humbly thanked the staff and the students, saying they were all a part of him winning the honor.

He teaches IB psychology and modern world history.
